Do you need to format your mac computer? It’s very easy. Let me explain.
What is the best, fastest and most efficient way to format your MAC computer? Here we will explain it in 7 simple steps. If your Mac has power problems or you want to reset it to its default settings, you don’t need to be a computer expert.
One of the reasons you made this drastic decision to format your Mac is that you decided to sell it, so it’s important that you clean up your computer completely so that you don’t leave any information about your identity or other personal documents stored on it exposed.
You must understand that simply deleting files is not enough. You have to install a new macOS version, only then you will be able to give the new owner a completely clean computer, reset from scratch. So this guide will help you completely restore an Apple computer to a pristine condition.
To summarize, here are the steps to follow:
- Connect to the internet to download the copy of the macOS operating system that is compatible with your computer model.
- Back up your MAC. You can use Time Machine or you can choose to clone your internal drive. You can use some available applications such as Carbon Copy, Cloner, or SuperDube.
- With these options, you can access your old files and transfer them to your external drive.
- Then proceed to disable your iTunes account or any other application. Also, close the session off and disable iCloud
- You must reset your Mac to Recovery mode. To perform this procedure, press and hold the Command and R key during the restart
- Then place “Disk Utility” to erase the hard disk. Then click continue, select main volume, then click unmount and finally delete. Finally, click on Reinstall MacOs and Continue.
- The rest is to follow the instructions of the wizard to proceed with the reinstallation of Mac.
How to format a mac step by step
Okay, so we’ve given you the rundown on how to format your Mac, now we’re going to do it in much more detail. In just 7 simple steps you won’t have any problems, you just have to be careful to follow what we say to the letter and be aware of the small processes to be executed.
Step 1: Copy the hard disk
As we discussed earlier, restoring your Mac to factory defaults means you’ll delete all the information you had stored there. If you don’t want to lose all that documentation, it’s best to create a copy of your hard drive.
The best way to do this is to use the programs listed above. Cloner, Carbon Copy or SuperDuper and having an external drive available. You should choose the main disk as the source disk and the external disk as the target disk, then proceed to clone. By doing this you will be able to boot your computer from the copy you made on the external disk.
You have to check that it works, to do this you must reset the MAC and press the “Option” button, just to start the system. Then use the arrow keys to move around the screen, select the external drive and hit Enter.
The disk you copied can be copied back to the main disk or if you want to access the original files from the device. Although we explain this process in a simple way, it is probably even easier to use a backup using Time Machine.
Step 2: Disable iTunes
This step must be performed because the Mac will no longer be linked to your account, due to security issues. You should know that you can use this application on up to five computers and we don’t think you should give access to anyone else if you want to format the Mac for sale.
The deauthorization process depends on the version you have. If you have the last one you must open iTunes and click on “Account”, then on “Authorizations”, locate the option “Withdraw authorization to this computer”. Finally, type your ID and password and the program gives you the option to press “Withdraw Authorization”.
If you have older versions, then you should click on “Store”, then “Remove authorization from this computer”.
Step 3: Disconnect FileVault
This program is responsible for encrypting the files on your hard drive, so it is recommended that to format your MAC, disconnect it before starting the restoration process.
What you need to do is open “System Preferences”, click on Security and Privacy and locate the option “FileVault”. You should see “FileVault is off disk”. Another way is to click on the lock that appears on the lower left side of the screen, enter your password and click on Unlock. Finally, press “turn off FileVault”.
Step 4: Disable iCloud
It’s equally simple, find “system preferences”, locate iCloud and click Logout. To clear the information, click Clear from MAC in all the windows.
By executing this disabling process you will be removing all payment information that Apple Pay has. We don’t think you have to explain much to understand the importance of this step, however, if you have any iCloud files created from that computer, they will be stored in your Home folder.
Step 5: Start from “Recovery Mode
To quickly enter this mode, just click on the Apple logo at the top left of the screen and select “Reset”, then press the Command and R keys until you see the apple spinning like a ball.
By applying this option, you ensure that if you give or sell your computer, the reinstallation will not be associated with your Apple ID.
Step 6: Format your MAC hard drive
Although we explained it in previous lines, we want to remind you how it is done. You must select “disc utility” and click on the Continue button.
If you have the High Sierra version, it is better to select the main disc, which is usually called Macintosh HD. Press Clear to clean the disc. If you are permanently erasing your data, do not proceed unless you have already copied your files.
After you have finished, you should exit the program, go to the main menu and select Disk Utility – Exit Disk Utility.
Step 7: Reinstall MacOS
This is the last step in MAC formatting. Select “Install Mac” and what you need to do is simply follow the instructions on the screen. The process will download and install an empty copy of your MAC. After this process, the computer will restart itself.
If your reason for resetting your MAC to its factory settings is to give your computer to someone else, you may want to skip the process offered by the Startup Wizard so that the other person can enter their own information from the beginning.
